The Feathered Nest blends 5-star luxury accommodation with a passionate regard for environmental and wildlife conservation. Sustainable practices are at the core of everything we do - from smart design and the best choice of building materials, to our business ethos and relationship with the communities around us.
We respect the delicate ecosystem of the property and work hard to protect the fragile environment without compromising on the quality and comfort of our retreats. The land is being carefully and progressively re-forested to return it to its natural state, with specially designed fauna corridors throughout the property giving animals a safe passage to their habitats.
Our black cockatoo breeding program is helping to conserve rare species of the bird so that generations to come can experience their beauty.
Guests are invited to learn more about conservation and environmental management, and have the unique opportunity to see wildlife outside the normal confines of zoos or tourist displays.
Our retreats use energy efficient compact fluorescent or LED lighting together with solar powered lighting for pathways and stairways around the property. Good design, ceiling fans and cross ventilation reduces the need for air-conditioning - but when it is required all our air-conditioning systems use inverter technology to be as effective as possible. Energy efficient gas hot water systems are installed in all the retreats.
Passive solar principles have been incorporated into the designs of the retreats with louvres providing cross ventilation and insulated walls and ceilings keeping temperatures stable. Building materials have been chosen according to their sustainability and impact on the environment. Water saving devices including shower heads, smart flush toilets and the use of recycled water for garden irrigation keeps water use to a minimum.
We provide organic toiletries for guests and only use environmentally-friendly cleaning products. Biodegradable materials and toilet tissue made from 100% recycled paper are also used.
We acknowledge the Yuwi and Birri Gubba peoples as the traditional custodians of this land where we live and work. Local products are used wherever possible and guests are encouraged to support local businesses.
Recycling bins are provided for guests to make it easy to recycle and help reduce landfill. Our office uses 100% recycled paper and recycles printer cartridges. We use an enviro-kleen sewage treatment system, with treated water used to irrigate the gardens.
The Feathered Nest follows ethical business practices by committing to best practice ecological sustainability, natural area management and providing ecologically sustainable wildlife experiences.
